The Lagos Anglican Diocesan Seminary (LAS) was founded on the Feast of St. Bartholomew 24th August, 1987 by the Bishop of Lagos, later primate of Nigeria, His Grace the Most Rev. Joseph Abiodun Adetiloye. Prior to its establishment, there had existed the Board for the continuing Education of the Clergy (BOCEC) from 1981 to 1985. The aims of BOCEC were to train non-stipendiary clergy to meet the acute shortage of clergy in the Diocese and to establish avenue for continuing education for the clergy and the Laity through workshops and seminars. The Chairman of the Board was the Reverend Canon J. J. H. Payne who was chaplain of St. Saviour's Church, (now Our Saviour's Church, Tafawa Balewa Square). Initially, the students were not more than five in a class and lectures were mostly in the evenings at St. Saviour's Church, TafawaBalewa Square. It was a three-year training of mature candidates towards ordination, Among the early lecturer were Canon Olumide, Canon Ogunbanjo, Rev. S. S. O. Sodipe, Rev. (Prof). Sam Olaitan and Rev. Canon Akinbola. The Lagos Anglican Diocesan Seminary. (LADS) was established in 1987. It took off as a Day Seminary on August 24- The Feast of St. Bartholomew with five students coming from their homes to attend lecturers at a temporary site at All Saints' Church, Yaba, later a hostel was provided at 11, Agard Street, Yaba with rooms enough for only ten students. The very Rev. Sope Johnson was the first Rector of the institute. Other lecturers Ven. (Dr,) Peter Adebiyi, Ven. (Dr.) Albert Agbaje, Ven. J. J. Ogunmilade, Ven. S. S. O. Sodipe, Ven. (Dr.) S. O. M. Adebola, Ven. (Dr.) Dele Okunnuga, Rev. A. A. Akinade, Ven. J. I. Ipinmoye, Rev. E. A. Sofowora, Rev. (Dr.) SegunOkubadejo, Rev. V. S. Adenuga and Rev. Canon S. O. Adesina. The first full-time Dean. the Retired Bishop of Ijebu Diocese, the Rt. Rev. I. B. O Akintemi was appointed in 1991 and he served in that capacity until December, I994. The Very Rev. Sope Johnson acted as the Dean up till February, 1995. The Ven. S. S. O. Sodipe succeeded him as acting Dean until May, 1995.
When Ven. (Dr). Dele Okunnuga was appointed substantive Dean. During his tenure the institution moved to its permanent site at 17, Broad Street, Lagos on June 9, I 995. On May l5 1996, the Rt. Rev. Peter I. Onekpe took over as full-time Dean of the Seminary. Bishop Peter I Onekpe was later translated to the see of Ika in 2001 . The Ven. S. S. O. Sodipe became the Dean immediately. The name of the School changed to Lagos Ang. Seminary. In January 2006, he handed over to the Bishop of Badagry- The Rt. Revd. B. J. Adeyemi. During his tenure the Ordination Course for Non-Stipendiary started in full force with the support of other five Diocesan bishops in Lagos State.
